Houstonian Won’t Let Parkinson’s Disease Keep Her From Competing In ‘American Ninja Warrior’

Allison Topperwein runs Litwithinblog.com, writes for the Huffington Post, and will soon compete in American Ninja Warrior

On top of all of that, she has Parkinson's Disease. All that she's accomplished is in spite of having PD, and her infectiously positive attitude will never let her life be defined by it.
I never would have imagined competing on the toughest obstacle course on national TV. But, that's the thing with limits. We only put them on ourselves!
December 31, 2014, at 37 years old, I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. Anyone with PD seems to remember exactly where they were when they noticed their first tremor. I was holding a coffee pot trying to fill it with water, when it began shaking wildly. That was 5 years prior to my diagnosis.
I’m a single mom of a GORGEOUS  little girl. I began Lit Within as a way to tell my story. It began as a cathartic release. However, since January 4, 2015, it’s taken on a whole new life, bringing me to my purpose in life.
I now simultaneously blog for the Huffington Post. I developed LitWithin.com, a social media network similar to Facebook, but based around positivity and empowerment. And Lit Within, Inc. is a non-profit corporation, currently awaiting tax exempt status. I can now proudly say I am an American Ninja Warrior and will soon compete on the NBC show this summer!
Exercise is THE ONLY thing proven to slow PD’s progression. I believe in this wholeheartedly, as people have a hard time believing I have a non-curable progressive disease. I hope to inspire you in many ways, but if for no other reason than to get moving!
Please email me at lit@litwithin.net with any questions and I’ll reply just as soon as possible!
Thank you,
Allison
