Parkinson’s Disease means no cure, progressively worse symptoms

WLNS) – Parkinson’s is a disease with no cure, that only gets worse over time, and there is no clear answer as to why people with the disease get it in the first place.
Being diagnosed with an illness with no cure is something that changed Ray Buch’s life forever.
“I was terrified, just terrified, and furious, I didn’t really have anyone to talk to,” Buch said.
For Buch, the disease started with him losing his sense of smell, but there is no single tell tale sign.
“The causes no one knows, otherwise we would have had a cure already,” Michigan State University Professor of Transitional Science and Molecular Medicine Dr. Tim Collier said.
Buch was diagnosed back in 2007, and after five years of staying active, he started his own dialogue group through Michigan Parkinson Foundation to give people with Parkinson’s a way to talk out daily struggles of the disease.
“Some people feel like that is even the best part of their month is getting together in this dialogue group and when I hear people say that, that is a big pat on the back,” Buch said.
Researchers who have dedicated decades to studying the disease say the latest efforts focus on decreasing symptoms caused by the medicine used for patients, as well as slowing down the degenerative process of the illness.
“Make the disease manageable, let people have a quality of life that they’re happy with, and essentially live well with Parkinson’s,” Dr. Collier said.
The disease affects everyone differently , but it does affect the whole body and generally starts showing symptoms later on in life.
