New Bern woman Pedaling for Parkinson's

Posted: Aug 22, 2016

NEW BERN, N.C. Craven County - For the past five years, Bethany Richards has driven her bike to and from work every week. Recently, Richards decided to modify her bicycle to raise money for a cause that hits close to home.
"I've had a grandfather that's passed away from Parkinson's and I have other family members that are living with the disease currently," Richards said.
On the back of her bike, a bright orange and green wooden box with the words "Pedaling for Patinson's" is stationed behind her seat. Richards will collect money through the rest of the year, 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
"I figured since I road my bike and it's already recognizable in the community it would be a good opportunity to give to a foundation that means a lot to myself and my family," Richards said.
There's currently no cure for the debilitating nervous system disorder. The Michael J. Fox foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for the disease.
Parkinson's disease affects more than 1 million Americans. According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, U.S. doctor's diagnose 60,000 new cases each year.

If you would like to contribute to the cause, Richards parks her bike outside MJ's on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
