New movement class to help people living with Parkinson's Disease

Aug. 28, 2016

Lake Superior Hospice and the Dance Zone of Marquette are partnering to offer those in the community living with Parkinson’s an opportunity to improve their health and overall well being through movement and dance.

Ruth Almén, a social worker at Lake Superior Hospice with a background in working with people with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, will co-facilitate this group along with Marge Sklar, co-owner and Dance teacher at the Dance Zone. Marge has been trained through the Dance for PD® model, an internationally acclaimed training program, begun in Brooklyn, NY, and is well known for her dancing and dance instruction.  Research indicates the positive effects dance can have for people with Parkinson’s, including improved gait, balance, cardiac health and quality of life.

The first class session will run for 6 weeks, twice each week beginning Tuesday, September 6, at 10 a.m.  Classes will be on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Fridays at 4 p.m.  Attendance at every class is not required and there is no experience necessary.

Classes are free, and donations are accepted.  For more information and to register, call (906) 225-7760.
