In-Home Senior Care Provider Joins Nation's Foremost Leader on Parkinson's Disease to Develop New Events, Educational Materials
Baltimore, Md.
Following a recent collaboration to develop its Parkinson's Care Program, Senior Helpers, one of the nation's premier providers of personalized in-home senior care, today announced a formal partnership with the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF). The partnership will help bolster the Foundation's educational resources while helping make life better for people living with Parkinson's disease through expert care, education and research. Together with Senior Helpers, NPF will create new resources for people with Parkinson's and their caregivers, including Spanish language translations of existing materials and a tip sheet on home healthcare and assistive devices. Additionally, the two organizations will connect with families across the country by hosting educational events in local communities which highlight the proper actions to take when caregiving for a loved one living with Parkinson's disease.
"With 60,000 new cases of Parkinson's disease diagnosed each year, the need for reliable, expert care to help family members support and manage the day-to-day complexities of the disease are essential," said Craig Leonard, Senior Helpers president. "Through our partnership with the National Parkinson Foundation, we will be able to educate a larger audience on the resources available to make life better for individuals living with Parkinson's. This includes sharing the value of working alongside expertly trained caregivers who can implement personalized plans and understand current assistive technologies that allow them to remain in the care and comfort of their own home."
With the myriad of assistive devices available to aid in caring for those with Parkinson's it can become overwhelming; National Parkinson Foundation has received over 14,000 calls in the last five years alone from caretakers seeking guidance on products to use for various hygiene, mobility and toileting issues. The partnership between Senior Helpers and NPF will help to make educational information and resources even more readily available to people living with Parkinson's, as well as their caretakers, families and friends, allowing them to understand and make informed decisions about their healthcare.
"NPF is excited to partner with Senior Helpers," said Paul Blom, interim CEO of NPF. "We have always been committed to helping people who care for those living with Parkinson's. Since the disease progresses slowly, caregivers gradually take on more responsibilities over time; this partnership will help provide caregivers the tools and resources they need at any stage of the disease."
Senior Helpers Parkinson's Care Program was recently developed in conjunction with leading experts from the National Parkinson Foundation's Centers of Excellence network in order to provide caregivers education on how Parkinson's disease advances and changes, as well as training on how to handle the range of mobility and movement limitations experienced by those who live with Parkinson's disease. It is the first of its kind in the in-home senior care industry.

About Parkinson's Disease (PD)
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly one million people in the US and over 10 million worldwide. Parkinson's is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's and is the 14th leading cause of death in the US. It is associated with a loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression) as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). Although promising research is being conducted, there is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease.
About the National Parkinson Foundation
