BioShai, an Israeli startup, may be on the verge of a medical breakthrough with the world’s first blood-test for an early diagnosis of Parkinson’s. The blood test, PdX, was described on BioShai’s website as “a simple blood test for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.”
The startup also noted that the blood test “can be combined with other clinical data to provide a more complete diagnosis to help physicians decide on the best course of treatment.”
Parkinson’s, a degenerative disorder of the nervous system that causes uncontrollable muscle spasms, affects over 10 million people worldwide, according to Abigail Klein Leichman of Israel21c.org. Jennifer Yarden, BioShai’s CEO, was quoted by the news site as saying that a diagnosis at an earlier stage would enable more precise treatment and a higher quality of life for patients.
Yarden also added that the cost of the test is significantly less than any imaging test currently available, Israel 21c reported, and that BioShai is currently in the last stages of “validating and standardizing” the PdX assay in a clinical trial in Italy and Israel.
BioShai said on its website that its PDx test is based on “the measurement of the level of expression of a set of genes. Gene expression is a dynamic process affected by stress, diet, and health leading to dramatic changes in the amount of messenger RNA molecules and protein in the human body over the course of our lives.”
The early test is only of Israel’s many medical breakthroughs Israel has been responsible for. These include, but are not limited to, the ApiFix system to correct scoliosis; a robotic exoskeleton, Rewalk, created by Argo Medical Technologies; and the MicronJet, an FDA-approved single use needle which delivers vaccines painlessly through semiconductor technology.
