Salem YMCA adds Pedaling for Parkinson's program

March 31, 2017

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month and the Salem Family YMCA is rolling out a new healthy living program: Pedaling for Parkinson’s.
“It’s the perfect time for us to launch program in Salem,” Community Health Director Nekole Baurer said.
“Research shows that peddling reduces tremors in Parkinson’s patients up to 35 percent,” Chief Executive Officer Sam Carroll said, “In some cases there’s even short term elimination.”
Pedaling for Parkinson’s takes place 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Participants must be between the age of 30 and 75 and diagnosed with Idiopathic PD, agree to periodically monitor progress and may not have certain other health issues. A prescreening interview and provider referral is also needed.
The free-for-members program aims to help provide a higher quality of life for participants. Not a member?
“We believe everyone should have the opportunity regardless of ability to pay for program,” Nekole said.
“We turn no one away because of inability to pay,” Sam said.
Financial assistance is available. For information, call Nekole at 503-399-2770 or go to theyonline.org.
