Seven-session program scheduled to begin Jan. 22 at the Wellness Center - Cape Coral, Florida
Lee Health's Healthy Life Center invites the community to attend an educational series about living with Parkinson's disease. The educational series will be held 10-11 a.m., on the following Mondays at the Healthy Life Center at the Wellness Center Cape Coral, 609 SE 13th Ct., Cape Coral:
* Jan. 22: "Living Well with Parkinson's Disease" Michelle Martin, coordinator of Hope Parkinson Program
* Jan. 29: "Voice and Communication: Let Yourself Be Heard" Lindsey Obermeier, SLP
* Feb. 5: "Swallowing and Cognition: Safe Swallowing and Flexing Your Brain" Lindsey Obermeier, SLP
* Feb. 12: "Exercise and Mobility/Benefits of Therapy: Power Up Your Moves" Janice Smeigh, DPT
* Feb. 19: "Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction and Management in PD" Kristen Parisi, DPT
* Feb. 26: "Balance and Fall Prevention for People with Parkinson's: A Balancing Act" Nathalie Grondin, PT
* March 5: "Activities of Daily Living: Taking Care of Business" Pearl Hernandez, OTR/L
The educational series will also be held over eight weeks at the Healthy Life Center at Coconut Point, 23190 Fashion Drive, Suite 105 in Estero. These sessions will be held 1-2 p.m. on Wednesdays from Feb. 7 through March 28.
According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease. The incidence of Parkinson's disease increases with age, but an estimated 4 percent of people are diagnosed before the age of 50. Men are 1 1/2 times more likely than women to have Parkinson's disease. The progression of the disease varies from person to person. The Healthy Life Center's Parkinson's Disease Series provides education and information on various treatment and rehabilitation options.
