MIDTOWN YMCA TO LAUNCH CYCLING CLASS FOR THOSE WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY/Press Release) — The Midtown YMCA is launching a new cycling class next month geared specifically to those with Parkinson’s disease.

The YMCA is launching their Pedal for Parkinson’s classes in effort to address the needs of Parkinson’s patients within our community. These classes can be easily adapted to individuals with all levels of the disease and are equally valuable to those who have been newly diagnosed as well as those in progressed states of the disease.

Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic showed a 35% reduction in Parkinson’s symptoms by the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace – optimally, 80-90 revolutions per minute.

While cycling is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, there is compelling evidence to show that it does make a real difference for many who try it.

Classes are designed to empower people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) by optimizing their physical function and helping to delay the progression of symptoms.

Goals for this class are to:

• Improve the quality of life for Parkinson’s disease patients and their caregivers

• Educate patients, caregivers and the general public about the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle after a Parkinson’s diagnosis

• Support research dedicated to prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease

These specialized classes will be offered twice a week at the Midtown YMCA. Pedal for Parkinson’s classes are included with a Y membership and are open to the public for just $10/class.

Participants must be diagnosed with Idiopathic PD and complete and submit a signed consent form and medical clearance form before participating.
