Sabiha Parveen
On Aug. 9, 10 and 11, OSU will be host to the Parkinson Disease Boot Camp in the Murray Hall Parlor. It's an opportunity for those with Parkinson's or family members to interact with professionals in the field. Sabiha Parveen is a researcher in the OSU Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. You can RSVP to the event by calling 405-744-5116.
1. Can you tell us a little about the event and why you’re doing it?
We are organizing a three-day free event for individuals with Parkinson disease and their family members. The goals of the event are to bring a variety of different professionals who work with this population to a common platform, increase awareness among the local community about the available resources and reach out to those who have never received any therapeutic services due to insurance or are not sure about what to do once they have a diagnosis. There will be free parking as well as free lunch for those who plan to attend the entire day.
2. How did you get involved in this field?
I completed my doctoral studies in speech-language pathology (aka communication sciences and disorders) from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 2013. My area of research is to examine the speech and cognitive changes associated with PD and how the quality of life of individuals with PD and their family members is affected post getting the PD diagnosis. I have been working as an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at OSU-Stillwater since 2014. Prior to that, I worked as a visiting assistant professor at OSU-Tulsa between 2013-14.
3. What’s something people misunderstand about Parkinson Disease?
(People think) Parkinson disease only affects movements (walking problems, rest tremors). In reality, it is a multisystem disorder affecting motor, cognitive and communication aspects of an individual.
4. How do you describe a Parkinson Disease support group for someone who has never been?
I have been serving as the facilitator of Stillwater PD support group since 2015. It is a group where people of different ages, backgrounds and experiences come together to learn, discuss and share different resources related to PD. Our group meets monthly at the Stillwater Medical Center, and over the years we have had local and regional professionals (doctors, neurologists, PTs, social workers, pharmacy representatives) come and share their expertise and resources. The STW PD group is free and has a dedicated website with information related to the meetings.
5. Who should attend the group, and how can they join?
Anyone (an individual with a diagnosis, family members of someone with PD, health professionals, community workers) who wants to know more about PD or is interested in working with folks with PD can join the STW PD support group. The same is true for the upcoming OSU PD Bootcamp. Anyone with or without PD who is interested in learning the different aspects of the disease (symptoms, therapy options, role of nutrition) is welcome to come and attend the bootcamp.
