The medical marijuana company that's growing rapidly throughout the state is preparing for a grand opening at its newest Clearwater location and soon a Tampa shop.
Knox Medical Inc., owned by Winter Garden-based Knox Nursery, will have a grand opening on Feb. 13 at 921 S. Missouri Ave. in Clearwater for the two-story dispensary.
"This will have a much more modern design," said Jose Hidalgo, founder and CEO, in comparing it to the other dispensaries.
The 3,894-square-foot, stand-alone dispensary was previously being used as a Senior Helpers location, a caregiving service business.
Typically, dispensaries are treated like pharmacies when it comes to regulating where they will be placed.
The dispensary will be open all week and have seven to 12 employees on staff; the second floor will be used as office space.
Knox Medical has an existing dispensary in St. Petersburg at 601 34th St. N.
The company is also planning to open a dispensary at 606 S. Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa in a two-story, 5,000-square-foot space in the next several months.
Knox Medical and other medical marijuana companies tend to focus on densely populated areas and want to branch out to more rural areas to provide better access, Hidalgo said.
The list of medical conditions that will permit medical marijuana use is broad and somewhat open-ended. It includes cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Knox Medical has products such as drops, capsules, topical creams and cartridges.
