Following on from their success last year when they raised £940, the team of Linda MacDermod, Diane Murray, Don Murray, and Chris Turvey are hoping to go one better but they need your help.
Linda told the Chronicle, “Prior to my husband being diagnosed with Parkinson’s I didn’t know anything about the disease. There’s both a lack of awareness and funding surrounding Parkinson’s and we are hoping to change that.”
Parkinson’s disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in part of the brain. This leads to a reduction of the chemical dopamine which plays a key role in regulating body movements.
Experts believe Parkinson’s is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental facts.
It is believed one in 500 people are affected by Parkinson’s disease in the UK. People over 50 are more likely to develop the disease but one in 20 people with the condition first experience symptoms when they’re under 40.
Linda told the Chronicle, “Parkinson’s can effect anyone at any age. I’m just grateful that there’s people like Diane, who’s from the Pontypool group and is a real powerhouse, constantly fighting to find a cure for this horrible disease.”
Don, Diane, Chris, and Linda will be at Abergavenny Market Hall all day today. So why not pop along and say hello.
