Supporters gather before the start of the ninth annual “Walk Over Water” on the Walkway Over the Hudson to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Several hundred supporters turned out on the Walkway Over the Hudson on April 23 to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease and money for research toward a cure.
Organized by members of the non-profit Parkinson’s Disease Support Group of the Mid-Hudson Valley Inc., the ninth annual Community Day Walk Over Water provided information and free bubbles and bracelets for children.
State Sen. Sue Serino, R-Hyde Park, presented a legislative proclamation honoring the Mid-Hudson group at the event.
Student volunteers from Marist College and John Jay and Our Lady of Lourdes high schools carried banners and provided “pushing power” with 18 borrowed wheelchairs for those unable to walk.
In addition to raising awareness, the group has raised $150,000 on the past eight walks,
most of which was doubled by another foundation, bringing the total to $300,000 for
research.
