Fellowship Program Building a Workforce of Parkinson's Disease Care and Research Specialists

NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, in collaboration with its longtime supporter and partner The Edmond J. Safra Foundation, announces The Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders. By increasing resources for specialized training for clinician-researcher neurologists, the program aims to grow the global base of movement dis
order specialists treating people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and contributing to research toward breakthrough treatments for the disease.

A lack of available funding for fellowships currently limits the number of openings in movement disorder specialist training programs, including programs at medical centers with the required expertise to train the next generation of specialists.
"Unfortunately, more people want to enter the field than there is funding to allow. Many fellows are unable to specialize in an area that is only going to grow in demand," said Matthew B. Stern, MD, director of the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and president of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (IPMDS).
The Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders is launching as a pilot program, supporting up to five new fellows a year for two years. Fellowships will be granted to multiple centers in each round of funding. Interested movement disorder centers may submit applications to MJFF through January 28, 2015.

In addition to delivering expert care to individual patients, clinician-researcher movement disorder specialists improve the landscape of Parkinson's care overall. The clinicians trained through The Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders also will be researchers, designing and conducting studies with their patients' unmet needs in mind. From the front lines, they are poised to observe trends and nuances of the patient experience that can lead to investigations toward greater understanding of disease and open new avenues to better therapies.

Teikoku Pharma USA Announces Positive Study Results of 7-Day Patch for Parkinson's Disease


SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Teikoku Pharma USA announced positive results of a recently completed bioavailability (BA) study examining the delivery of TPU-002RA, a 7-day rasagiline patch, for Parkinson's disease. This study was part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended program for a 505(b)(2) New Drug Application (NDA) for TPU-002RA and will be a critical component of this product's NDA.
The study confirmed that one patch of rasagiline applied for 7 days achieved a higher systemic exposure than that of AZILECT® (rasagiline) 1mg tablets administered orally once daily for 7 days. Additionally, the patch produced more consistent blood levels of rasagiline throughout the 7 day period, without any significant peaks as seen with the oral product.

Finding balance: Class helps Parkinson's patients manage disease

Every Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bill Van Heukelem splashes his way through the Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery in Water class at the Roosevelt Swim Center. The 73-year-old was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 12 years ago, and the class has done wonders to help alleviate his symptoms.
“I enjoy the water class at the Swim Center because we can work on balance without fear of falling and learn how our arms, trunk and legs are all connected and work together to help us balance on land,” he said.
The Mayo Clinic describes Parkinson's as a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. The disease develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. In addition to tremors, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement. There is no cure for the disease, and it affects each person differently.
“Parkinson's disease not only affects movement but also interferes with things that others can't see, such as the digestive system, vascular system, sense of smell, and ability to sleep,” said Van Heukelem. “I have given up hunting because I can no longer hold the gun steady and my reaction time is slower and less predictable. I gave up golfing because I was too uncoordinated.”
Van Heukelem said he’s less affected by his symptoms when he’s riding his horse or exercising, which is why he makes time for the weekly water class. He appreciates that class instructor Bjo Schreier is knowledgeable about the bio-mechanics of Parkinson’s disease.
“She teaches us how to move efficiently and tone our muscles to increase our fitness and endurance,” he said. “She makes the class fun and makes us feel like teammates, so it’s interactive and as much a social event as it is a workout. We learn that we can do much more than we and our friends thought we could.”
According to Schreier, the class is designed to have dynamic movements. “We took our class to the water for more stability and more resistance (strength) work. It allows for fun falling. We practice super sounds – word groupings that require tricky diction – to help with learning the sensations of speech, both diction and volume. We also do memory work. Everyone picks a name of a vehicle and we throw the ball to someone calling his name. All our classes require very mindful attention in order to reestablish new neuro-pathways.”
Schreier said she’d like to cut through the stigma associated with Parkinson’s. “If you hear that you have Parkinson’s disease, your life is not destroyed; it is redesigned. I’d like the community to know that those with Parkinson’s are not mentally retarded, drunk nor disinterested. These are symptomatic conditions and the person is same person masked underneath these characteristics. It is our joyful duty to continue to relate to the person and not to his condition in order to continue relationships.”
Van Heukelem’s wife, Laurie, said people often don’t understand that those with Parkinson’s disease speak slower and quieter than others. It’s important to encourage them to speak louder and to take their time. She also said facial muscles are affected, so it takes more prompting to elicit a smile or other expression.
“Our grandson is the best at making Bill smile,” she said. “As Bill’s disease progresses, we come across bumps in the road, so to speak, but then we tend to adapt and seek ways to improve the quality of our lives. It is important for care partners to seek support from others who live with those who have Parkinson’s.”

Possible Disease-Modifying Therapy for Parkinson’s One Step Closer to Patients
CBS News in New York shined a spotlight on Parkinson’s research yesterday evening — for good reason.  A promising disease-modifying therapy is getting closer to reaching people with Parkinson’s.  
Isradipine — a medication currently approved to treat high blood pressure — is being studied to determine if it can influence the course of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Researchers believe the drug works to prevent the death of dopamine-producing cells and therefore might slow the progression of disease. Previous studies have confirmed drug safety and tolerability so testing will now move into a Phase III clinical trial — the largest, and last, stage of drug development testing. The STEADY-PD trial is recruiting over 300 participants with early PD, each of whom will take either isradipine or placebo and be monitored for three years.
Todd Sherer, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation, told CBS News that isradipine is one of several active research areas in Parkinson’s. The Foundation has invested millions in helping to advance isradipine from the earliest testing in preclinical models to the current Phase III trial testing. Positive results from this study would move a disease-modifying therapy for Parkinson’s one step nearer to pharmacy shelves.

Ryan Reynolds, Michael J. Fox team up to find Parkinson's cure




Ryan Reynolds and Michael J. Fox have been starring together for years now — not in front of the camera, but as friends united in the personal goal of finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Reynolds got involved with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2008, and has since joined the organization’s board of directors. Like Fox, Reynolds’ father has had the disease for many years.

This morning on NBC's Today Show, Willie Geist sat down with Michael J. Fox and Ryan Reynolds to talk about a shared connection: both Willie's and Ryan's fathers have Parkinson's. Characteristically upbeat, the interview had Ryan joking that he was wearing his Michael J. Fox Foundation underwear in support. "For these two, laughter is medicine," said Willie. And, on his father's diagnosis, Ryan said, "It kind of galvanized everyone else [in our family] to seek resources, and in a strange way it's really brought us together."
The actors sat down with TODAY’s Willie Geist, whose dad also has Parkinson’s, before the Fox foundation’s annual gala in New York on Saturday. 
Geist asked Reynolds if he remembered his father telling him and his brothers that he had Parkinson’s, a degenerative disease with motor symptoms that include tremors, rigidity and balance problems.
“I have a slightly different, weird, strange story about that because my father really hasn't ever said he has Parkinson's disease,” Reynolds said with a laugh, adding that his dad is in his 70s.
“He comes from a pretty prideful generation,” he said. “And he doesn't really talk about it too much. But, he’s maybe said it once or twice out loud.”
Still, Jim Reynolds’ 1995 diagnosis helped rally the family.
“It kind of galvanized everybody else, to sort of seek resources,” the actor said. “And for us, it's in a strange way, it's really kind of brought us together.”
Geist, whose father, “CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent Bill Geist, revealed his two-decade-old diagnosis in 2012, agreed that Parkinson’s can bring people together.
“If there's any upside to it, it's that it has rallied an awful lot of people,” Geist said.
Fox was diagnosed in 1991 at age 29 but didn’t announce it publicly until 1998. He recalled keeping his diagnosis to himself and close family members at a time when he was at the height of his career, with a growing family.
“It’s a degenerative, progressive disease,” Fox said. “And,” he added, “also there's shame in illness.”
Now, Fox said that in his house, his family — he and his wife, Tracy Pollan, have four children — helps him by pulling a chair out a little bit for him. Reynolds joked that maybe they were doing that so the TV and film star would fall to the ground.
Though they can laugh, they also serious about finding a cure for the disease, which affects an estimated500,000 to 1 million Americans.
Geist noted that he wears a Fox foundation bracelet everywhere he goes. Reynolds said he was wearing “rubberized, galvanized Michael J. Fox underwear.”
As Fox has become almost as well known for being the force against Parkinson’s disease as he is for starring in “Back to the Future,” does he ever tire of being the public face of the disease?
“I really don't,” Fox said. “Once I made my diagnosis known, it’s been a tremendous opportunity and a tremendous privilege.”
