Free dance classes to help with Parkinson's disease to be offered soon

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A dance class is being offered soon by Lake Superior Hospice that could help alleviate the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

The course will be running Tuesdays at 10:00 am and Fridays at 4:00 pm each week for six weeks at the Dance zone in Marquette. Anyone interested can attend one or both days every week for free. Donations are welcome to help cover expenses from the event. A dance troupe in Brooklyn designed the course to improve the brain's functions.

“For some reason the specific effects of what Parkinson's does to a person in their brain, some of those things can be improved with dancing,” said Ruth Almen, Director of Community Relations and Program Development for Lake Superior Hospice. “Very specific things about dancing apparently help the movement, can increase people's overall quality of health and certainly physical health, but also helps them with their gait and their stepping which can be real problematic for folks.”

If there's enough interest for the class they'll extend it to a 10-15 week course.
