Lucy Miller sailing to help raise awareness of Parkinson's

July 17, 2017    Liz Langdale

Johns River resident Lucy Miller has packed a lot of ginger tea for her sailing trip from Cairns to Perth.
The last time the 41-year-old sailed was when she was 20-years-old but she isn’t worried.
“I’ve spent majority of my life on the water,” she said.
“I’ve done surfing, been a swimming teacher and have been involved in surf life saving.
“Water is my friend.”
Ms Miller is joining Sydney sailor Poppy Moore on her fundraising journey for Parkinson’s disease as she sails around Australia.
Ms Moore set sail at the end of March 2017 and she plans to explore as much of the Australia coast and coastal regions as possible. She has been inviting sailors to join her for the journey to help fundraise and raise awareness.
Both Ms Moore and Ms Miller have been impacted by Parkinson’s. Ms Miller’s mother was diagnosed with the brain degenerative disease two years ago and Ms Moore’s father was diagnosed in 2006.
Ms Miller first became aware of Ms Moore’s journey through the Parkinson’s NSW issue. When Ms Moore docked in Port Macquarie Ms Miller went to meet her.
Ms Miller met Ms Moore at Magnetic Island, north of Townsville, and set sail on Sunday, July 9.
Ms Miller said she is looking forward to stopping off at places located at the tip of Queensland and visiting remote places in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Ms Miller said it’s amazing how many people she knows who have been touched by the disease.
Her mother has been undergoing respite and is also on medication to address her anxiety.
Since treatment Ms Miller said her mother’s mood has been positive and she has been happy to try new things.
Ms Miller said Ms Moore has extensive experience with sailing and can handle the 31 foot yacht by herself but prefers company.
Ms Miller is happy to take on the job of steering the vessel.
The women expect to arrive in Perth in November and Ms Miller will fly home from there.
