Learn how drumming helps people with Parkinson’s disease

By  on
FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Parkinson’s Support Group will hold their monthly meeting, 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, Oct. 27, in the fellowship hall of Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1620 S. Stage Coach Lane, in Fallbrook. The meetings are held the fourth Friday of the month.
The topic this month is “Drum Circle” and will discuss drumming therapy, based on clinical practice revealing that group drumming improves the condition of those with Parkinson’s disease. Recently, there has been renewed interest in drumming as a therapeutic intervention in a wide range disease. In a new Parkinson’s disease and drumming study, entitled, “DRUM-PD: The use of a drum circle to improve the symptoms and signs of Parkinson’s disease,” researchers provided the background context which inspired their research.
The guest speaker will be Clark Edmond of Heart Beats Drum Circle who will speak on drumming education. In addition, there will be a brief presentation by Josefina Olvera, project coordinator for University of California San Diego School of Medicine’s “Caregiver Supportive Care Intervention Study,” on how to become a participant in clinical research study. For more information, visit http://psychiatry.ucsd.edu/research/alzcare.
Before the program, there will be a time for sharing, coffee and refreshments. The meeting is held in support of persons with Parkinson’s disease, care partners and persons interested in improving the world of those affected by Parkinson’s disease.
For more information, call Irene Miller at (760) 731-0171.
