Learn In-Depth About Parkinson's Disease Off-Time at a Free Greater DC Area Parkinson's Conference

WASHINGTONNov. 21, 2018

The Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance (PMDAlliance), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for people with Parkinson's, presents a free, educational Parkinson's conference on December 6th at 10:00 AMat Bender JCC of Greater Washington, 6125 Montrose Rd, Rockville, MD. Complimentary lunch is included, and registration is required. People with Parkinson's disease, those who care about them, and health care providers are invited to attend this free event.
Laxman Bahroo, DO, MS, neurologist and movement disorder specialist is the director of both the Neurology Residency Program and Botulinum Toxin Clinic at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, as well as an associate professor at the Georgetown UniversityDepartment of Neurology. Dr. Bahroo's primary area of focus is the medical and surgical management of Parkinson disease and essential tremor. He also specializes in the therapeutic intervention of botulinum toxin injections for dystonia, spasticity, and excessive drooling.
Dr. Bahroo will provide an in-depth and interactive talk exploring "off-time" in Parkinson's disease. Most people experience off time but do not know that the symptoms may be tied to their Parkinson's or understand how to talk about it with their physician. This talk, developed by Sunovion, guides the audience through an interactive exploration of motor symptoms (such as tremor and stiffness) as well as non-motor symptoms (such as anxiety and apathy) that can be a result of off time.
Movement disorder neurologist Yasar Torres-Yaghi, MD will also speak at the conference. Dr. Torres-Yaghi, a native of Washington, DC, completed his medical training at George Washington University and then went on to intern at Union Hospital, and complete his residency and movement disorders fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. In his role of movement disorder neurologist, Dr. Torres- Yaghi is spearheading an initiative to care for the growing population of aging patients with neurodegenerative conditions characterized by overlapping features of both cognitive impairment and Parkinson's.
Dr. Torres-Yaghi will present on deep brain stimulation surgery as a treatment option for Parkinson's disease, and dispel some of the myths surrounding this intimidating but important treatment. The physician presentations, partnered with the PMDAlliance emPowered!® Tool, will enable participants to gain insight into their disease process and leave with a tool to utilize to have conversations with their physician and family members. Rounding out the program will be speech language pathologist Hannah Grassie, MS, CCC-SLP, who will speak about the importance of speech and voice therapy in living with Parkinson's.
The Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to not only proving quality information delivered by their more than 70 movement disorder partners across the US but ensuring attendees at all events receive tools to translate that information into a usable skill, immediately. Believing that information without application is trivia, PMDAlliance offers online and in-person workshop style conferences, retreats and services for people impacted by movement disorders with a special focus on support group leaders, care partners and adult children.
