Fly fishing clinic helps those with Parkinson's disease

September 4, 2019   by FOX 11 News

APPLETON (WLUK) -- A fly fishing event in Appleton is making a difference for those with Parkinson's disease.

Trout Unlimited invited more than a dozen people to Appleton Memorial Park Wednesday for a day of fun. Fly fishing can help improve balance, coordination and increase mobility, all of which are important for someone with Parkinson's disease.

The idea for the event came from Jonathan Hill of Stoughton who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2014. When he learned how fly fishing can be therapeutic for his condition, he wanted to share that with others.

"I think the coolest thing about an event like this is the sense of community. Parkinson can be a very isolating disease so our organization is here to bring people together and let them know they are not alone with the disease so we’ve got a good group of people here as well as some spouses, some children and some friends to have a good time and enjoy this beautiful day," said Carolyn Hahn of Wisconsin Parkinson Association.

A free picnic lunch was also provided.

The Wisconsin Parkinson Association will be holding a free workshop in Green Bay on Sept. 26 to help those living with the disease.
