CORNWALL, Ontario – In its eighth year in Cornwall, the Parkinson Canada Superwalk is expecting to draw double the participation as last year’s event with organizers projecting around 200 philanthropic walkers on Saturday, Sept. 14.
“We’re expecting a very good turnout,” noted Earle DePass, this year’s event organizer. DePass, who was asked to take over coordination efforts, said that his late uncle lived with Parkinson’s disease, so he has a personal understanding and experience with the disease.
Walkers can register from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the RCAF Wing 424. After speeches commencing around 11 a.m., walkers can embark on a 1 km or 2 km course.
DePass said that a majority of the 17 individuals helping to organize the walk also live with the disease.
“I think they’re very keen on seeing the walk run smoothly and that funds are given to the intended recipients,” said DePass, who explained that a support group that meets once every month in Cornwall to discuss new material and exercises, will benefit from the walk.
This year’s fundraising goal for the walk is to reach $30,000. Walkers can download pledge forms or donate online at parkinson.ca.
“So far the indications are very positive that things will go (well),” said DePass who thanked media, the community and several event sponsors for spreading the word about the inspiring and important day for many.
