Sweat Therapy Fitness encourages those with Parkinson’s Disease to fight back at the “Rock Steady Boxing Open House.” The free community event educates individuals with Parkinson’s and their supporters on the benefits of Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing based fitness program designed to slow Parkinson’s progression and improve quality of life.
The Rock Steady Boxing Open House will be held at Sweat Therapy Fitness Uptown on Saturday, July 23, from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to:
• Meet Rock Steady Boxing coaches and Sweat Therapy Fitness Owners/ Founders Kim & Brian Bibeau
• Discuss program benefits with current participants
• Observe a Rock Steady Boxing demonstration
• Learn about the Rock Steady Boxing fitness assessment
• Socialize with others in the Parkinson’s community
• Enjoy complimentary food and drink
The “Rock Steady Boxing Method” was developed by Rock Steady Boxing, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in Indianapolis. Adapted from training used by professional boxers, the program emphasizes gross motor movements, balance, core strength and rhythm.
Sweat Therapy Fitness Owner/ Founder Kim Bibeau is a graduate of the Rock Steady Boxing Training Camp and implements its proven program as a certified affiliate.
“Every workout I’m reminded how this program is positively changing lives,” says Bibeau. “I hope the open house exposes more people with Parkinson’s to Rock Steady Boxing. I know once they meet our participants and hear their stories they’ll be inspired to try this method to improve their own symptoms.”
“Boxing Training for Patients with Parkinson’s Disease” a case study by the University of Indianapolis confirms community-based boxing classes can produce short and long-term improvements in balance, gait, activities of daily living and quality of life. The American Society of Neurorehabilitation has also found that forced exercise is capable of enhancing neuroplasticity or altering brain biochemistry, both of which could alter the course of PD.
“When I first came to Sweat Therapy Fitness in 2014 I used a walker and balance was my biggest challenge,” says current Rock Steady Boxing participant Richard who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2011. “I even bought a wheelchair because my mobility was declining so quickly. “Now I get around completely unassisted and have a much more positive outlook on life.”
Rock Steady Boxing at Sweat Therapy Fitness is geared to people with all stages of Parkinson’s Disease and participants range greatly in age and level of mobility. Some participants are able to jump rope, do crunches on the floor, etc. while others exercise seated or with the assistance of a caregiver or “corner person” as they’re called during Rock Steady Boxing workouts.
