On the first Sunday in November more than 47,000 athletes will participate in the iconic New York City Marathon, running through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan’s Central Park.

This year, Howard County resident and St.Vincent Kokomo occupational therapist, Denise Bradley, MS, OT, Physical and Sports Therapy, Southway, will take on the 26.2 mile race to raise awareness and ultimately help shorten the road to a cure for those in the community who are faced with the daily challenge of living with Parkinson’s disease. Inspired by by her patients who battle this disease daily, Bradley is taking on the mission of raising funds for Parkinson’s research and The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

“I am running to fund research and to raise awareness of programs available for people with Parkinson’s, to maximize their quality of life,” commented Bradley, occupational therapist at St.Vincent Kokomo Physical and Sports Therapy on Southway Blvd. “I have witnessed through my patients, their care partners and their families, the devastating effects of Parkinson’s,” stated Bradley.

At least one million Americans are living with Parkinson’s, according to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. That percentage of Americans applied to Howard and surrounding counties equates to approximately 400 area residents living with this disease.

Bradly is also the St.Vincent Kokomo Staff Liaison for the Parkinson’s Support Group in Howard County, where she passionately provides the group’s facilitator, Susan Szep, and its nearly 60 participants with connections to resources for their monthly meetings.

As Bradley prepares for her upcoming marathon, her personal goal is to raise $3,200, where all donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the gifts will go directly to Parkinson’s research.

If you would like to support Denise and the individuals in the community living with Parkinson’s disease, you may donate at https://fundraise.michaeljfox.org/2017-TCS-NYC-Marathon/Kokomotive4aCure or would like to know more about the Parkinson’s Support Group, please call Susan at 765-438-3508.
