The three Foley boys grew up in the shadow of Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover and they returned to the club this week to raise money for Parkinson's disease research.
Their father, Vincent "Vin" Foley, suffers from the disease and his kids, including two stepchildren, wanted to do something special for him. The result is the First Annual Foley Cup, a golf tournament at Indian Ridge held Monday.
Vin and the rest of the Foley family came up with the event a year ago and have handled all of the planning for some 120 golfers who signed up. The event sold out long ago and all the money raised will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. And, Vin will match the amount raised.
"My kids wanted to do something and I wanted to do something to help people going through this," said Foley, 70, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's three years ago.
The Foleys lived on Comanche Place and Brentwood Circle when Jeffrey and Timothy Foley attended school. Both brothers graduated from Andover High School in 1997 and 1995 respectively. Their older brother, Kevin Foley, graduated from Brooks in 1989. Their step-siblings are Todd Graff and Elizabeth Luekens.
Vin Foley and his wife, Jeanne, said the Michael J. Fox group is dedicated to finding a cure for the disease and they very much support that. Fighting for others matters and contributing to the Parkinson's research fund helps reach the goal to some day find a cure for the disease.
Vin Foley, who worked for a dog treat manufacturer called Phelps, now calls Hampton Beach home. He left Andover in 2004.
He takes medication for his illness. He said he has no tremors but his feet shuffle and he has other symptoms. Like so many others, he just wants researchers to find a cure.
