In women with Parkinson’s Disease there can be a profound impairment in sexual arousal,
behaviour, orgasm, sexual satisfaction and sex drive. The objectives of this study were to
assess the level of sexual function in women with Parkinson's Disease, and the description of
sexual dysfunctions. Women with Parkinson’s Disease were assessed over a broad age range
of 40 to 89 years.
According to the Female Sexual Function Index,
sexual dysfunction was present in 87% of women with
Parkinson’s Disease, but this was not a lot more than
the dysfunction that occurred in 79% of women who
did not have Parkinson’s Disease. However, according
to the Sexual Dysfunction Inventory the difference
was far greater, with 57% of women with Parkinson’s
Disease having sexual dysfunction, and only 22% of
women who did not have Parkinson’s Disease.
Sexual dysfunction was found to be more prevalent in women with Parkinson's Disease and
is predicted by older age and the severity of depressive symptoms.
