5 Things
… to go out and do
Crozet Jam Band Tribute to Linda Ronstadt
7 to 9 p.m. Friday
Starr Hill Brewery Tap Room in Crozet
It’s so easy to fall in love this time of year, and if you’ve always been a Linda Ronstadt fan, the Crozet Jam Band is playing your songs — and saving a space just for you. Feel free to sing along, or bring your instruments if you’d like to join the jam. The Grammy Award-winning Ronstadt announced in 2013 that she’d stopped singing as a result of Parkinson’s disease, so donations will be accepted at Friday’s festivities for the National Parkinson’s Foundation. The band will perform songs by R.E.M., Ronstadt’s “Trio” buddy Emmylou Harris and The Dixie Chicks, too, and if you still haven’t heard what you’re looking for, the band is willing to take requests from its book of more than 180 songs. No cover; donations accepted for National Parkinson’s Foundation. (410) 703-9897.
Valentine’s Day Wine and Dessert Pairing

Keswick Vineyards
Celebrate one of the year’s finest dessert holidays in style with sweet treats paired with Keswick’s wines. Settle in by the fireside on the vineyard’s enclosed porch for a cozy winter afternoon. $20; $15 for Keswick Vineyards Wine Club members. tastingroom@keswickvineyards.com; (434) 244-3341, Ext. 105.
Mardi Gras Ball
7:30 p.m. Saturday
The Space Downtown
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to slip into your favorite tuxedo and ballgown again, let the good times roll at the inaugural Mardi Gras Ball while you help raise funds for the Sexual Assault Resource Agency. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and plenty of time for dancing. Organized by Jean Brickwedde of Alternative Hair Solutions, the event will offer only 140 tickets; they’re expected to sell out quickly, so don’t wait too long to get yours. $110 per person. meetings.team/mardigras or (434) 964-0865.
Screening of “Hometown Habitat: Stories of Bringing Nature Home”
2 to 5 p.m. Sunday; snow date is Feb. 18
V. Earl Dickinson Building at Piedmont Virginia Community College
Ever wondered how you could make your own ordinary back yard a more welcoming environment for birds and wild creatures? Part of the secret is making room for native plants, which offer shelter and food to wildlife and low-maintenance beauty to gardeners and landscapers. A screening of the award-winning film “Hometown Habitat” will be followed by a panel discussion. Producer and director Catherine Zimmerman will be on hand to introduce her film; panelists include landscape architect Kennon Williams, Gem Bingol of the Piedmont Environmental Council and Devin Floyd of the Center for Urban Habitats. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. for light refreshments, and each participant will get a copy of the Piedmont Native Plants guide. Free. pvcchorticulture.wordpress.com.
