Parkinson’s Foundation staff presents ten groundbreaking research programs at the conference in Kyoto, Japan
MIAMI & NEW YORK —June 4, 2019—The Parkinson’s Foundation will join the global Parkinson’s community at the 5th World Parkinson Congress (WPC) in Kyoto, Japan from June 4-7, 2019 to provide an international forum to learn about the latest advancements in Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Parkinson’s Foundation is proud to be a silver supporter of the WPC and will be exhibiting at booth #510 at the Kyoto International Conference Center.
Parkinson’s Foundation experts will present ten research posters on various topics aimed at driving new ideas and collaboration at WPC. Research topics that will be presented include: ‘Impact of Offering Genetic Testing and Counseling to People with Parkinson's Disease in a Clinical Setting,’ ‘Improving Clinical Trials Through the Science of Patient Engagement;’ ‘Spanish Language Educational Programming - Serving Diverse Communities;’ and more. The research will be presented by the authors to WPC attendees.
“We are thrilled to join the global Parkinson community at WPC and to collaborate with those who share our vision of helping people with Parkinson’s disease live better,” said John L. Lehr, Parkinson’s Foundation chief executive officer. “We look forward to sharing our latest research findings at WPC, where clinicians, scientists, people with Parkinson’s and their care partners in attendance can benefit from this new information.”
Parkinson’s Foundation staff have also been selected to host sessions about critical issues central to the global Parkinson’s community, like the pre-congress session on “Understanding Genetics and Parkinson’s: A Powerful Tool for Improving Research, Care & Quality of Life.” Foundation staff will also demonstrate, through research findings, the importance of patient engagement in research and a closer look at the unmet needs, research and care priorities for women with Parkinson's.
“Our hope is that the research presented at the World Parkinson Congress will drive collaborations that make a tangible difference in advancing treatments,” said Jim Beck, PhD, Parkinson’s Foundation chief scientific officer. “We are incredibly proud to join our colleagues at WPC on this global stage as we work together to advance research towards a cure.”
Parkinson’s Foundation patient advocates will be in attendance driving awareness of the importance of global collaboration. For more information on the 5th World Parkinson Congress and to see a full list of the research posters presented by Parkinson’s Foundation experts, visit parkinson.org/WPC.

The triennial World Parkinson Congresses provide an international forum for dialogue on the latest scientific discoveries, medical practices, and caregiver initiatives related to Parkinson’s disease.
Each Congress brings together physicians, neuroscientists, a broad range of other health professionals, care partners, and people with PD (PwPs) for a unique and inspiring experience. Cross pollinating members of the community is important in the effort to expedite the discovery of a cure and cultivate best treatment practices for this devastating disease.
Mission
To provide an international forum to learn about the latest scientific discoveries, medical practices, caregiver initiatives and advocacy work related to Parkinson's disease. By bringing physicians, scientists, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, caregivers and people with Parkinson's disease together, each Congress allows for a worldwide dialogue to help expedite the discovery of a cure and best treatment practices for this devastating disease.
Tom Isaacs
The World Parkinson Congress was a big part of Tom's mission to engage people with Parkinson's in the research arena. Tom participated in the World Parkinson Congresses consistently and with great passion when we launched the Coalition in 2004. He spoke at every Congress since the launch and was seminal in the success of four WPC's by helping prepare the patient advocate community to engage and participate in the Congress while taking control of their healthcare. He inspired WPC to start the 'Ambassador program' in 2010, the first of its kind, and he participated over the years on the WPC Steering Committee, WPC Advocates Committee and most recently the WPC Program Committee.
Tom inspired many people with Parkinson’s to engage in clinical trials and to speak out about their Parkinson’s to raise awareness. Tom’s dignity, sense of humor, and incredible ability to carry a tune and give everyone a good laugh, impacted the lives of thousands of people all around the world.
