Raising hands and awareness at 34th Annual Parkinson's Summer Forum.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- According to the Parkinson's Foundation, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease each year.

To raise awareness about the latest research and community support,Parkinson's Network North held their 34th Annual Summer Forum at the Hagerty Center on Thursday.

More than 200 people showed up to listen to doctors explain the new findings on the disease and ask questions.

Although each case is different, support group leaders say it's important people know they are not alone on their Parkinson's journey.

"If you've seen one Parkinsonian, you've only seen one Parkinsonian," said Hettie Molvang. "So, everybody - whether you are a parky, or are aging - you can just push the aging back by exercising and singing out loud."

Parkinson's Network North has monthly support group meetings in Traverse City, Suttons Bay and Frankfort.
