DJ Gareth O'Callaghan reveals Parkinson's diagnosis

Radio DJ Gareth O'Callaghan says he is "devastated" by the news that he has be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Taking to Twitter to give his followers an update on his health, the 4FM and former RTÉ 2fm presenter said: "Got news I wasn't anticipating recently. I've been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

"Just wanted to let everyone know I'm doing good, staying positive and strong.

"Devastated by the news, but life goes on. Thanks to those close to me, and especially huge thanks and love to Paula"

After he revealed the news he received a huge number of tweets of support from friends and fans including Operation Transformation’s Dr Ciara Kelly, who said: "Music therapeutic in Parkinson’s ... you’re in the right job ... hope you’re doing ok."

O’Callaghan replied: "Thanks Ciara. Music is medicine. You're so right. So is resistance training and mindfulness. I'll kick its ass!"

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system marked by tremor, muscular rigidity, and slow, imprecise movement

It can result in the loss of automatic movements, posture and balance.

There is currently no cure for the disease.
