Central Texas woman diagnosed with Parkinson's undergoes unique procedure

Drake Lawson,    Aug 24, 2019

WACO, Texas (KWTX) Kim Morrison says her symptoms, including pain, began back in 2009.

"For many years we just tried different things about that pain," says Morrison who diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease while only around the age of 40.
It is something she says is rare.

"They consider anything under 50 to be a young onset and there is very few of us," she says.

Her doctor Michael Soileau, says Morrison was doing well with their initial plan of medication and exercise but it wasn't giving her the best outcome.
Dr. Soileau then suggested she undergo DBS, or Deep Brain Stimulation.
DBS is a surgery that helps with Parkinson's tremor symptom.

"I was skeptical because I had already had a few surgeries so I thought surgery was way off," says Morrison who was eventually convinced by Dr. Soileau to do the surgery.

"The goal is to have her appear that she doesn’t have Parkinson’s disease," says Soileau.

"That’s my goal is to make someone really have to guess someone has Parkinson’s."

Morrison went through the surgery, which consist of electrodes being inserted into her brain, and having a battery put into her chest a few days after.
In the weeks since her surgery Morrison says she is recovering well, but that she is still fighting.

"You don’t really beat Parkinson’s there is no cure at all, but you I just need to keep fighting to be the best that I can be everyday," says Morrison.
