Parkinson's nurse service in Macclesfield to resume

ByAlex Scapens       August 27, 2019

Health bosses have found a new provider for the community service but the news has been met with caution

Macclesfield Hospital

Health bosses have announced a plan to resume the Parkinson’s nurse service that runs out of Macclesfield Hospital - but the news has been met with caution.

NHS Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust will provide the service, which offers up to 500 people with the condition community-based help.

A date for resumption has yet to be confirmed and there has been criticism of how long the process has taken.

The specialist nurse is seen as a vital lifeline to those with Parkinson’s as patients can be on a complicated combination of medication and need monitoring, as reactions can be inconsistent.

Dr Andrew Wilson, clinical chair of the CCG, said: “We are pleased to be working with Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, the new provider for the community Parkinson’s nurse service in Eastern Cheshire.

“Recruitment of a nurse is underway and we hope to be able to confirm a date for the service to resume shortly.
“We are very conscious of patients’ concerns and the re-commencement of this service is being treated as a high priority.”

It is hoped - although this has also yet to be confirmed - that the service will continue to be based out of Macclesfield Hospital.

Previously it was provided by East Cheshire NHS Trust but when one nurse retired and another left her post it stated the service was not ‘clinically or financially sustainable’.

So it was stopped early in 2019.
Tony Worthington, a member of Parkinson’s UK, who lives in Bollington, says the length of time patients have been without a specialist nurse is ‘a disgrace’.

Tony Worthington, from the Macclesfield and Cheshire East branch of Parkinson's UK

The 60-year-old said: “The longer it goes on the worse the problems it creates are. Doctors can’t administer medication as it is very specialised and they are not trained.

“Often people with Parkinson’s can’t drive. I know how much people are suffering, which leaves you with a very raw sensation.
“I’m nowhere near celebrating (the latest news). When the service is running and going well and I can look people in the eye that’s when I’ll feel better.”
