Parkinson’s support group prepares for SuperWalk

July 18, 2016

Spending time together and sharing is a big part of what the Parkinson Society Maritime Region, Pictou County Chapter, does as it provides information to its members.

Members of the Parkinson Society Maritime Region, Pictou County Chapter, recently enjoyed some time together at LORDA Park.

That’s exactly what they did last week as the members had a picnic at LORDA Park in Lansdowne.
This is the second year that the support group for people with Parkinson’s and their family members have taken the trip to the park, which is handicap accessible.

LORDA curator Dave Leese and his wife Lenora have been members of the group since Lenora was diagnosed with the disease and say they have found it to be a great support, he said. What he likes is the fact that the people in the group have been through what they’re going through and can help offer advice.

Leese has made LORDA Park his life work and enjoys being able to share it now with the members of the Parkinson’s group.
“Everybody had a great time,” he said.
There’s a building on site that they were able to hold their picnic in which was out of the heat and flies and made it all the more enjoyable for those who were able to go out.

Josephine Jollymore, who leads the group and has been active with the group since her late husband was battling the disease, said the members of the support group are busy preparing for this year’s SuperWalk, which is going to be held at Northumberland Regional High School on Sept. 10.
They are encouraging as many people as possible to take part. Last year more than 70 people took part and raised over $17,000.
Since 1990, Parkinson’s SuperWalk has raised more than $31 million for support services, research, advocacy and education, with last year’s walk raising $2.9 million across Canada. For more information about the Parkinson’s Walk visit www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
