YMCA cycling class helps those suffering with Parkinson's Disease

July 26, 2016

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A group at the Roseburg YMCA is looking to get more cycling-induced endorphins.
They're in the Pedal for Parkinson’s class.
The forced effort of cycling produces endorphins which in turn churn out dopamine, a chemical lacking in those with Parkinson’s.
That kind of stimulation can ease many symptoms of the disease, like tremors, dementia and overall mood.
"Your motor capabilities are improved, your mental attitude is improved, your ability to remember things, to do complex puzzles, all those kind of things are improved," says Pedal for Parkinson’s instructor Sandy Hendy.
Stationary cycling is also said to help those with Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis.
The Pedal for Parkinson's class meets at the YMCA Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
