Hundreds participate in the Parkinson's Walk & Run in Wollongong

Aug. 28, 2016

Walkers: The walkers begin to line up for the start of the 2 kilometre Parkinson's Walk. Picture: Greg Ellis.
After starting from humble beginnings three years ago the annual Unity Walk & Run for Parkinson's NSW keeps growing.
Around 200 turned up to Stuart Park, Wollongong on Sunday much to the delight of organiser Jennifer Gray who wants to raise funds and awareness.
Unity Walk & Run has been held in Homebush for about six years and Mrs Gray decided to bring it to Wollongong because of her father Alan Doughton’s experience with Parkinson’s.

When he was diagnosed ago she realised how little it was known or spoken about it. Her goal has always been to attract people from the Illawarra.
She was delighted when around 30 registered for the first walk and she was surprised on Sunday when more than 200 people arrived for the third annual event. Parkinson's nurse Nina Cheyne accompanied a support group from the Shoalhaven known as the Shoalhaven Shakers and the highest fundraiser Col Woodcroft had a team of more than 30 people from the Illawarra and Sydney.
The day has also enjoyed the support of the Bendigo Bank Oak Flats/ Shellharbour, Wollongong Lions Club, Wollongong City Council and many others businesses and people.
Parkinson's NSW sees the Wollongong event, held on the same day as the Sydney walk, as a great starting point in its quest to have many other regional Unity Walk & Runs throughout NSW.
