Barrington of Carmel to offer program to slow effects of Parkinson’s

December 20, 2016

Krebsbach

The Barrington of Carmel has partnered with the Indiana Parkinson’s Foundation to offer The Climb, a comprehensive research-based exercise and wellness program to help slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
The senior living community will begin offering the program to residents and the general public in January 2017. The official start date has not yet been announced.
The Waterman family, founders of the Indiana Parkinson’s Foundation, formed The Climb in 2009 to provide support to those afflicted with Parkinson’s and improve their daily lives through exercises and activities that work toward greater physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
“The great part about The Climb is that we’re not only focusing on exercises, which is the main component, but we’re focusing on all of the symptoms that we can prevent,” said Allison Krebsbach, fitness specialist at The Barrington of Carmel.
The program incorporates exercises and activities that offer neuroprotective benefits, improve cognition, speech and coordination and address common Parkinson’s symptoms. Exercises and activities include postural therapy and balance, yoga, dance, massage therapy, speech therapy and weight training. The program is geared toward varying levels of Parkinson’s and progression rates.
“We’re targeting the symptoms to give them a better quality of life,” Krebsbach said. “We can’t fight the disease, but we can fight the symptoms.”
Classes will be offered from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Enrollment is $60 for the 12-week course. The classes will be offered on an ongoing basis and will take place in Windsor Hall at The Barrington of Carmel, 1335 S Guilford Rd.
For information, visit indianaparkinsons.org/the-climb. To sign-up, contact Krebsbach at 317-810-1962 or Peggy Muncy at 317-810-1827.
