Recreation Fitness launches new Parkinson’s-focused classes

December 11, 2017

Recreation Fitness Studio in Long Beach (4234 Atlantic Ave) is launching a new group fitness class specifically for those living with Parkinson’s disease this winter. Employing “exercise as medicine”, the class is designed to help participants improve activities of daily living, build strength and overall health, improve balance and mobility, and prevent falling.

About Parkinson’s disease. Approximately 60,000 of Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) each year, and this number does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected. (It is estimated that more than 10 million people worldwide are living with PD.) PD involves the malfunction and death of neurons that produce dopamine, a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. As the amount of dopamine decreases, a person can experience difficulty with movement as well as many other “non-motor” symptoms.

About PWR!Fit. Though PD does not decrease lifespan, its symptoms can dramatically affect quality of life. Called PWR!Fit, this new class by Recreation Fitness directly addresses those symptoms with aerobic activity, balance/mobility/coordination training, and practical strategies for performing daily activities with ease. The class is taught by instructors certified in the Parkinson’s-specific skill training program called PWR!Moves, which was developed by the acclaimed neuroscientist and movement disorder specialist Dr. Becky Farley.

“PWR!Fit integrates the best of physical therapy exercises with our fun-loving approach to fitness,” said Recreation Fitness founder, Emily Duval Ledger. “We’ve had so much fun developing the curriculum, and can’t wait to launch it very soon!”

About Recreation Fitness. Founded in 2008, Recreation Fitness has become synonymous with making fitness fun in Long Beach. With all-level, “recess-based” group classes and a playful, innovative personal training style, the diverse team of certified trainers and nutrition coaches has found a niche in working with clients who may not feel comfortable or satisfied in a traditional gym setting. “In addition to our traditional weight loss and sports performance clients, our team has been working with more and more folks who have PD, autoimmune issues, and other chronic conditions, and it gives us so much joy to help people reclaim their lives,” said Duval Ledger. “Medications can only get you so far, so this ‘exercise as medicine’ approach is an excellent way to fill in the gaps and improve quality of life.”

Classes are set to start this winter at the Recreation Fitness Studio in Bixby Knolls, 4234 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach. Interested parties should call (562) 243-2221 for more info and/or to be put on the reservation list.
