24-hour Skate-a-thon for Parkinson's kicks off Friday at UNMC

By Cheyenne Rowe / World-Herald staff writer Jan 22, 2018

The 24-hour Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s is set for Friday at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's ice rink.
The fundraiser will run from 2 p.m. on Friday to 2 p.m. the following day and is open to the public. There will be a heated tent, as well as hot drinks, food and snacks.
The event, in its eighth year, has raised more than $170,000, according to a UNMC spokesman. Proceeds go toward Parkinson’s research at UNMC and to Parkinson’s Nebraska, a charitable organization that helps local people who are affected by the disease.
Founded in 2008 by Colleen Wuebben who had Parkinson’s, the event moved in 2011 from the Wuebben's backyard to the UNMC ice rink, located east of 42nd Street, between Dewey Avenue and Emile Street.
For the fifth year, the event will be held in memory Wuebben who died in 2013 at age 60. Wuebben’s husband, Ted, and their children have continued the skate-a-thon tradition.
More than 500 skaters have participated in each of the last two skate-a-thons
The cost to participate is $15 and includes skate rental.
Registration and donations to Parkinson’s Nebraska can be made at eventbrite.com.
