Parkinson’s disease - the 75p snack you should eat everyday to boost brain health

PARKINSON’S disease symptoms develop gradually over a period of time, and may be caused by nerve damage in the brain. But, adding this cheap snack to your diet could improve brain health, and reduce signs of the neurodegenerative condition.

Parkinson’s disease diet: Reduce symptoms by snacking on cashew nuts

    • Parkinson's disease symptoms could be reduced by eating cashew nuts
    • Chemicals in cashews improve brain health, scientists claim
    • Walnuts could also reduce signs of the brain condition
    • Speak to a GP if you're worried about the signs or symptoms of Parkinson's disease
Parkinson’s disease is a condition that causes the brain to become progressively more damaged over time, according to the NHS.

It’s caused by a loss of nerve cells in part of the brain. These nerve cells help with the production of dopamine, a hormone that sends messages between the brain and the nervous system.

But, you could lower your chances of Parkinson’s disease symptoms by making some dietary swaps, it’s been claimed.
Snacking on cashew nuts could boost patients’ brain health, revealed charity the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Parkinson’s disease diet: Reduce symptoms with cashew nuts
Cashews, as well as some other nuts, could help to improve the health of the brain, and lower the risk of Parkinson’s symptoms, it said.
Just a small amount of cashews could make a difference, the charity added.

Chemicals in cashews may be responsible for its brain-boosting properties.

Anacardic acids, the chemicals in cashew nuts, have promising neuroprotective effects against degenerative changes in Parkinson’s disease patients, according to Brazilian researchers.

“While there is no prescription for a Parkinson’s disease-specific diet, to maintain overall good health most people living with Parkinson’s disease should eat a variety of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products, and protein-rich foods such as meat and beans,” said the Parkinson’s Foundation.

    “Also consider including
nuts, olive oil, fish and eggs to your diet, for their beneficial fats.

Walnuts could also improve brain health in Parkinson’s disease patients, and reduce the risk of symptoms, added medical website Parkinson’s Life.

“Nuts are great,” it said. “More specifically, walnuts have been shown to have some fantastic effects on the brain.
“Studies show that even a small portion of walnuts in our daily diet can reverse the brain’s ageing process and improve learning, memory and motor coordination.

“Researchers attribute the benefits to their anti-oxidant properties, which may combat damage caused to brain cells by free radicals [the molecules that are said to cause ageing] in our bodies.”
Eating the right foods and drinks help to optimise medications and keep bones strong in patients, it said.
