YMCA to hold Parkinson's fitness program

June 14, 2016

The Bedell YMCA is offering "OhioHealth Delay the Disease," a fitness program designed to empower people with Parkinson's to take control of the disease with daily exercise. Sessions are from 10:40 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 28 at the YMCA with a fee of $32 for members and $64 for non-members.

With the recent passing of boxer Muhammad Ali, attention is sure to be amplified on the disease that may have contributed to this death: Parkinson's disease.

More than 1 million Americans are living with Parkinson's disease with nearly 60,000 new diagnoses each year. Parkinson's disease is an incurable, slowly progressive movement disorder caused by the loss of nerve cells in a part of the brain that produces the chemical, dopamine, which controls body movements. Symptoms, which develop when about 80 precent of dopamine has been lost, include tremors, stiffness or slowing of muscle movement, loss of balance and soft or slurred speech. Symptoms continue to worsen as the disease progresses.
Empowering results of the YMCA's "Delay the Disease" fitness program include: moving about with ease and confidence in a crowd, getting out of bed or rising from a chair independently, improved handwriting, dressing independently and regaining a sense of moving with normality.

For more information, please contact Health Enhancement Director Scott Hunter at 712-336-9622 or scott.hunter@okobojiymca.com.

The YMCA is one of the nation's leading nonprofits, strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Across the nation, 2,700 YMCAs engage 22 million men, women and children -- regardless of age, income or background -- to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation's health and well-being and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Anchored in more than 10,000 communities, the YMCA hopes to deliver lasting personal and social change.
