With the search about to be suspended due to nightfall, a state police trooper and his K-9 made one last attempt to find a missing hunter with Parkinson's disease.
The search near Northbridge focused on the area where family members said the 70-year-old man would normally go hunt. K-9 units led the search with other police and fire fighters following behind and the State Police Air Wing searching from above, state police said.
But when the search was about to be suspended until morning, Trooper Pat Robinson recommended one more search toward the north, state police said. The team that took on the search included Robinson, Trooper Matt Baird, a K-9 named Caber and two Northbridge officers.
After about a half-mile, Caber showed a change in behavior. Following Caber's lead, the troopers and officers heard a person yelling and blowing a whistle.
Caber led the team up a trail and found the missing man sitting with his dog at the base of a tree.
"The man was escorted from the woods to EMS personnel, as he appeared to be in the beginning stages of hypothermia," sate police said. "Had the K-9 team not located the man, the end results potentially could have been very different."
