The second annual “Find a Potion for Parkinson's!” 10K/5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held Saturday at Gamble Park. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Parkinson's Assoication of Alabama.
The event, hosted by Inspire Fitness, raised over $4,000. This year’s goal is $5,000.
One of the event organizers is Amie White, whose father, Danny Box, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s more than 20 years ago.
“For a long time people really didn't hear or know much about Parkinson's. The awareness has become more abundant in recent years. My goal is to promote PD awareness to honor my father and others who are battling this disease. There might not be a cure in my father's lifetime, but my prayer is there will be one in the future,” White said.
Parkinson's Disease is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. The cause is unknown, and presently there is no cure.
There are treatment options to manage symptoms. PD involves the malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain (neurons).
PD primarily affects neurons in an area of the brain called substantia nigra.
Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine, a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. As PD progresses, the amount dopamine produced in the brain decreases leaving a person unable to control movement normally.
“Find a Potion for Parkinson's!” will have a silly costume contest for kids and adults at 8 a.m. The Fun Run will start at 8:30 and the 10K/5K will begin at 9.
There will be awards given to the top the male/female runners in the 10K/5K and finisher medals for the first 100 registrants.
Registration forms are available at Inspire Fitness and Solid Image. For more information, call April Madison at 616-2854 or Amie White at 300-2606.
