Health Ministry to cover Parkinson’s drug, will work to identify suitable patients

The Ministry of Health says it will work with the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre to identify and prioritize patients for coverage of the medication DUODOPA.
Physicians at the centre will identify suitable patients and submit requests for PharmaCare coverage under the ministry’s Special Authority program.
"We have been in discussion with the Parkinson Society British Columbia and the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre about this treatment, and they have shared strong testimonials and compelling accounts of the drug improving symptoms and quality of life for some patients," said Health Minister Terry Lake.
Coverage is expected to be provided for a small number of patients who are “clinically appropriate,” according to a press release.
"We understand that quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease can be a significant challenge,” Lake said. “With introduction of coverage on an exceptional basis, we are offering an additional option for families facing this terrible disease."
DUODOPA is a combination of levodopa and carbidopa administered directly to the small intestine through a surgically placed tube.
The treatment comes at a cost of $60,000 a year.
The Ministry of Health has been in discussions with AbbVie, the manufacturer of Duodopa, to explore ways to make the product more affordable.
It will also review the use of deep-brain stimulation surgery for severe and complex Parkinson's patients.
The drug’s profile has been raised in recent weeks after a CTV News story on Paddi Wood, a Central Saanich woman suffering from advanced Parkinson’s whose emotional plea to the government for help struck a chord with the public.
There are 12 people in B.C. who have been pushing for coverage of the treatment.
The drug is covered by public health plans in other provinces, including Alberta.
