Parkinson group hosts event

MAY 6, 2019

KINGSFORD — The Parkinson Society of Dickinson County Area, a support group for Parkinson’s disease patients, caregivers, family and friends, will host “A Meeting with the Neurologist” on Thursday, May 16, at the First Presbyterian Church on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford.

Registration for the free presentation will begin at 10 a.m., with the program at 11 a.m.
Dr. Steven Schechter will discuss the management of “off” episodes in Parkinson’s disease and APOKYN. “Off” episodes are the wearing-off effect of Parkinson’s medication before the time for the next dose. When this happens, heightened symptoms of PD such as tremor, balance difficulties and coordination may occur. He will discuss how to manage the episodes with APOKYN.
Schechter also is a certified yoga instructor and will direct a yoga routine for participants, which can be done either sitting or standing.
He is an associate professor of neurology at Oakland University William Beaumont Medical School. He is actively involved in teaching and clinical research. His clinical interests include movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, headache and general neurology.
Schechter recently authored the third edition of a text, “Understanding Parkinson’s Disease: A Self-Help Guide.”
He is a health and fitness advocate and enjoys biking and yoga. He is on staff at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and Havenwyck Hospital in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Schechter will be available for questions from the audience before he returns to lower Michigan. The program will conclude about 3 p.m.
A complimentary lunch will be served at noon, sponsored by Stephanie Belf of U.S. World Meds.
