May 25, 2016
Until Saturday, June 18, donations will be accepted at all Ontario LCBO stores for Parkinson Canada.
“We want to thank LCBO’s generous customers and supportive staff who help us raise significant funds and increase public awareness, in a highly cost-effective manner, through their network of stores across the province,” Joyce Gordon, CEO of Parkinson Canada, said in a release. “These funds help us to greatly touch the lives of those living with Parkinson’s now and provide hope for a future where Canadians will not have to face Parkinson’s, thanks to a cure.”
According to Parkinson Canada, symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease include tremors, slowness and stiffness, impaired balance, rigidity of the muscles, handwriting problems, stopped posture  and sleep disturbances.
There are no tests to confirm the disease, and currently no cure.
Parkinson Canada will invest the funds raised through the LCBO donation boxes in education, advocacy and research initiatives and to fund its more than 75 support groups in Ontario.
“As a socially responsible community-minded retailer, LCBO is pleased to partner with Parkinson Canada and support a variety of worthy causes through the Giving Back In Our Community fundraising program,” George Soleas, LCBO acting president and CEO, said in a release. “Through the generosity of LCBO customers and the support of our staff, we help improve the lives of countless Ontarians and make a difference in communities across Ontario.”
In 2014, LCBO raised more than $9.5 million for charities through special programs and initiatives, of which $8.8 million was raised through in-store fundraising.
